I did a "finish the picture" activity with my younger classes earlier this year, and used it again as a substitute activity on a day I was out, with the 7th graders, this time leaving the word SYMMETRY as the focus, (crossing my fingers and toes that the sub would remember to explain it to them!) I was astounded at what they came up with after digging through the magazine box & photo bin, especially the gentlemen, who found some athletes, cars, etc.. I love seeing the boys truly shine as artists when they find something they care about and enjoy. We spent another day working on these when I got back and if they still weren't done it went into the "I'm through, now what do I do?" bin for them to work on another day. This is a wonderful activity to help practice drawing what you SEE, not what you THINK it looks like. At the end of the year I put them on display because I loved how they turned out and the kids were so proud of their work.
A few students didn't quite get the "symmetry" memo but had already spent a day's work on their picture so I let them continue rather than starting over. Que sera sera when I'm away for a day!
