Cityscapes

Earlier this year, 2nd grade used cool colors to cut out the outlines of buildings and glue them onto a dark blue background to make a collage of a city skyline.  We talked about the color wheel and cool colors and discussed what the difference would be between windows being cut out in black vs. yellow.  It also got us talking about landscape style artwork and how you can make a "landscape" picture without drawing any land at all.  I didn't let them draw the outlines first, they had to just dive right into the cutting.  I pre-cut window strips and put some on each table so they could easily glue down windows as their last step.  (We also talked about how not every building needed ALL its windows).
At the end I gave them the option of adding "a couple" small yellow/white pastel stars and a moon, and showed them how to "diffuse" them with their finger.  As you can see they all got quite carried away, but they had fun working with the pastel after so much cut & paste.  :)
