Ahoy Matey!

The 5th graders learned about artist Winslow Homer this week, then made some of their own white capped waters.
For day 1 of this 2 day long project, students painted 2 pieces of paper: one watercolored paper for they sky (some did blue skies, some did sunsets, some did stormy colors, all were encouraged to layer the sky rather than using one single tone,) the other paper in blue/green'ish tempera, for the water.
On day 2, students ripped the blue "water" paper into strips to make white caps, and glued them down in layers for the water.  We also made origami sail boats (I walked them step-by-step on the overhead and had students help each other,) some ended up floating, others sinking, and quite a few students added details like birds in the sky or people on the boats with the last few minutes of class.
The kids loved it, and so did I!
