Brand Yo' Self
The 8th graders were doing some consumer studies in another class, so the timing was right to incorporate a project on brand names. This project was not overly "artful" except that I'd learned that, in all their time at this school, the 8th graders had NEVER painted in art class except with watercolor paint or to make posters for big school projects which is why the tempera was even around. HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?!?!? (It's my first year at this school and there was no curriculum left for me... sarcastic-yay!) I whipped out the tempera and after some research and group brainstorming, I just let them fill in the blanks, paint-by-number style. The results, especially when put together, were astounding!!!
Early finishers were encouraged to fill in the background, while some students struggled to finish painting before it was time to move on, but it was fun to watch the kids, (especially the 8th grade boys who often rush or think art is "girly" or "uncool",) taking their time and wanting to do their very best on this project. I'm guessing these are hanging up in many of their rooms at home.
