Pop art portraits

This was a time consuming but well worthwhile project I did with my 7th and 8th graders.  It is a project I hope they treasure from this year in art class!

Upload student photos at www.ribbet.com and apply the "Posterize" effect with only 3 colors.
Print in black and white.

Students learned about copying lines of a picture using a grid prior to this project.

They made a grid using rulers/pencils over their printed (posterized) photo, and a grid of equal proportions on a blank piece of computer paper.  It took about 3 tedious classes for them to transfer all the lines of their photograph to their blank paper.  (At first there were grumbles in regards to their drawings not looking like anything, but I kept reminding them to trust the process and trust their eyes, and it all came together at the end, much to their delight.)

They then chose a color of tempera paint and used it to paint in the darkest values on their picture, then a tint of that value to paint in the gray parts of their portrait.  I was hoping to make an even lighter tint for the white sections, but this project was already taking too much time, so I saved that for the early finishers and let the rest leave it white.

The last step was to choose a contrasting color for the background and a color of mounting paper to help it lay flat, (I do too many projects with paint on plain computer paper, but it's plentiful and cheap!)

If I had a redo: I would remind students to erase their grids before painting... especially in the "white" areas!  I would also have liked to see them use a thin sharpie marker to outline their pictures when done.
